The vascular system (also called circulatory system) is made up of vessels that are responsible for carrying blood throughout the body. These vessels include arteries, veins, and capillaries.
– Arteries carry oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body.
– Veins carry blood from the body back to the heart.
– Capillaries are tiny vessels between arteries and veins that help in distributing blood to the body.
While this is an efficient system that works well, blood vessels can get damaged, blocked, or weakened. These issues can develop as we age, due to lifestyle or occupation choices that keep us on our feet for extended periods of time or put too much pressure on the legs (obesity), or after an accident.
These issues can prevent vessels from transporting blood from one place to another. As a result, blood won’t adequately flow in the direction it should, which can cause circulatory issues as well as visible changes to the way veins appear on the skin. The veins can become enlarged, twisted, and swollen. They also often change in color and become blue or purple. This type of issue is called varicose veins.
There are a lot of effective treatments available that can help combat varicose veins so that you can have clear and beautiful skin once again. Let’s look at some of these treatments below
Compression Stockings
The most common treatment and the least invasive treatment for varicose veins is wearing compression stockings. Compression stockings help the legs pump blood back to the heart, which improves circulation. While compression stockings are great for alleviating symptoms associated with varicose veins, such as pain in the legs, they do not help eliminate varicose veins.
Sclerotherapy
This is a minimally-invasive procedure in which your doctor injects varicose and spider veins with a liquid chemical that closes off or fuses the veins shut. The treated veins then wither and die, disappearing from your legs in a few weeks. The procedure can be performed at your physician’s office and does not require anesthesia.
Endovenous Laser Therapy
Endovenous laser therapy involves inserting a thin laser fiber into a diseased vein through a small puncture in the leg and delivering laser energy into it. When the fiber is removed, the vein closes off. Like sclerotherapy, endovenous laser therapy can be performed in your physician’s office and does not require anesthesia.
Harmony Laser Therapy
The Harmony Laser eliminates superficial leg veins through completely non-invasive means. The procedure involves applying the Harmony Laser to the treatment area, allowing pulsed energy to help collapse the targeted veins. The procedure is not painful, although you may feel a deep pulsing sensation. There is no discomfort after the treatment and you can resume activities immediately following your session.
